SARB holds rates after surprising hold decision

SARB holds rates after surprising hold decision (July)

Central bank surprises markets by keeping repo rate at 7%; Kganyago says current stance is restrictive enough to bring inflation to target.

JOHANNESBURG — In its latest July meeting, the South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee unexpectedly left the repo rate at 7%, citing that the current level was “restrictive enough” to control inflation. The decision surprised markets (earlier expecting a hike). Governor Lesetja Kganyago noted that with inflation at 5% in June (above the 3% target), he believed the current rate would bring inflation back to target within two years. The rand, however, briefly fell on the announcement, reflecting investor nerves.

SA private sector PMI shows growth as inflation cools

SA private sector PMI shows growth as inflation cools

PMI edges back into expansion territory at 50.5 as input cost inflation eases; employment and new orders show modest improvement.

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s private sector returned to marginal growth in June according to the S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The PMI rose to 50.5 (any value above 50 indicates expansion) from 49.6 in May. Economists noted easing input cost inflation was a key factor: input prices had hit a 46-month high in May but fell sharply in June. Firms reported continued employment growth and recovering new orders, suggesting resilience amid economic headwinds.

South African rand edges up on strong gold prices

South African rand edges up on strong gold prices

Gold’s surge boosts local currency; rand firms to R16.34/$ as commodity-linked gains offset global risks.

JOHANNESBURG — The South African rand strengthened slightly against the US dollar on 7 August, buoyed by rising gold prices. By morning, the rand traded around R16.34 to the dollar, about 0.2% firmer on the day. Analysts attributed the gain to gold’s surge (its biggest weekly jump since January) amid hopes for peace in the Middle East and falling oil prices. Gold, a major South African export, typically supports the rand; U.S. data on jobs and Fed rate expectations also had a secondary influence.

Western Cape court hears challenge to land expropriation law

Western Cape court hears challenge to land expropriation law

Constitutional challenge to Expropriation Act opens; opposition parties argue law violates property rights, could deter investment.

JOHANNESBURG — A Western Cape High Court began hearings on Monday over the constitutionality of South Africa’s new Expropriation Act. The Act, signed last year to allow seizure of private land for public interest (even without compensation), is being challenged by opposition parties (DA, IFP) and lobby groups. Plaintiffs argue it violates property rights under the Constitution; government lawyers argue it targets only unused land. The case, expected to last this week, could have far-reaching effects on investment and land reform policy.
