SARB holds rates after surprising hold decision (July)
Central bank surprises markets by keeping repo rate at 7%; Kganyago says current stance is restrictive enough to bring inflation to target.
JOHANNESBURG — In its latest July meeting, the South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee unexpectedly left the repo rate at 7%, citing that the current level was “restrictive enough” to control inflation. The decision surprised markets (earlier expecting a hike). Governor Lesetja Kganyago noted that with inflation at 5% in June (above the 3% target), he believed the current rate would bring inflation back to target within two years. The rand, however, briefly fell on the announcement, reflecting investor nerves.
