Congo Ebola Cases Top 4,000 as Outbreak Spreads

DRC passes a grim milestone, straining health systems amid conflict.

JOHANNESBURG — The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported on Aug 7 that its ongoing Ebola outbreak has surpassed 4,000 confirmed cases – the highest ever recorded in this epidemic. This outbreak (declared in May 2026) is described as “the fastest-spreading on record” by officials. The latest health ministry bulletin confirmed 4,053 infections, including 1,850 deaths. Cases have now appeared in five provinces (Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo), indicating wider geographic spread than earlier clusters. Experts note that local conflicts and limited vaccines (this Ebola strain lacks a widely available treatment) have hampered containment. An epidemiological study cited by Reuters suggests the outbreak may have begun in January, months before detection.
