Durban Women’s Arts Festival Returns This Week
JOHANNESBURG — The South African Women’s Arts Festival (SAWAF), Durban’s major women-centered cultural festival, will open on Aug 7 this year, marking its 30th anniversary (having started in the 1990s). Performances will run through Aug 18 at venues across Durban, with a program of plays, dance shows and music concerts created by and about African women. This year’s lineup (announced on the Playhouse Company’s website) emphasizes “community, resilience and freedom,” featuring topics from traditional folklore to modern empowerment. For example, one dance troupe will perform a piece recalling the women marchers of 1956, while a theatre piece tackles women’s roles in post-apartheid society. Festival director Maureen Tanker said attendance is expected to grow compared to last year, as the City of Durban and the national Department of Sports, Arts and Culture provided extra funding for Women’s Month.
