JOHANNESBURG — Netflix has announced it will release Umthetho, an original South African crime drama series, on Aug 14, 2026. The seven-part series – whose title means “The Law” in isiZulu – follows Mbali Dlamini, a public prosecutor whose life is turned upside down when she discovers that her brother Moses, whom she believed had died 14 years earlier, is very much alive and running a ruthless prison syndicate. Forced to protect their younger brother Sphelele, she becomes entangled in Moses’s criminal world, torn between her duty to the law and her loyalty to family.

Shot in local settings and featuring a predominantly South African cast, Umthetho joins Netflix’s growing slate of African content aimed at domestic and diaspora audiences. The series is a local adaptation of the Brazilian Netflix hit Brotherhood (Irmandade), which originally ran for two seasons starting in 2019. Produced by Black Brain Pictures – the award-winning studio behind Lockdown, DiepCity and The Black Door – the show is directed by Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall, with Mandla N and Melissa Nayimuli serving as creative directors. The ensemble cast includes Nqobile Nunu Khumalo (Mbali), Tony Kgoroge (Moses), Given Stuurman (Sphelele), Sindi Dlathu, Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, SK Khoza, Molefi Monaisa and Ernest Msibi.
