“A Touch of Red” Exhibition Opens in Bloemfontein for Women’s Month
JOHANNESBURG — The National Museum in Bloemfontein on Aug 8 launches “A Touch of Red”, a new art exhibition highlighting South African women’s lives and histories. Curated for Women’s Month (Aug 9 is Women’s Day), the exhibit includes paintings, photography and biographies tracing the legacy of the 1956 Women’s March on the Union Buildings (70th anniversary this year) and current issues like gender-based violence. The museum’s announcement says “A Touch of Red” uses “artistic excellence to explore the lives and social histories of women”. The title references the red pants worn by the ANC Women’s League marchers in 1956. The exhibition runs through September 2026, with guided tours and talks scheduled on Aug 9 to mark Women’s Day. Free entry is offered to matriculants and pensioners on Aug 9 in honor of the march’s centenary.
