“Operation Shanela II” yields drugs, guns and suspected criminals.

JOHANNESBURG — The South African Police Service (SAPS) announced that its weeklong “Operation Shanela II” (July 27 – Aug 2) arrested 15,798 people across the country and confiscated large caches of contraband. According to the SAPS statement, 329 of those detained were believed drug dealers, and 3,242 suspects had illegal drugs on them. In a major bust on July 31, authorities seized cocaine valued at roughly R28 million after intercepting a shipment arriving from São Paulo at OR Tambo Airport. Over the same period, SAPS confiscated 153 illegal firearms nationwide. Eastern Cape police led with 29 handguns seized, followed by KwaZulu-Natal (27) and Western Cape (23). Vehicles stolen or hijacked (86 in total) were also recovered under the operation, which involved SAPS units, Customs, Home Affairs, and other agencies.
