Five Jailed in KwaNongoma Tavern Murder, Sentenced to Life
JOHANNESBURG — A KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Mthunzini on Friday sentenced five men to life imprisonment (plus 100 additional years) for their roles in a November 2022 armed robbery that left a tavern owner dead and multiple victims injured. SAPS confirmed the convictions, which included murder, conspiracy, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and illegal firearm possession. Acting on the evidence, the court found all five defendants guilty of the fatal robbery at a KwaNongoma tavern, where gunmen stormed the bar during license-hours and opened fire. The tavern owner was killed, and four others critically wounded. During sentencing, the judge noted the “heinous nature” of targeting an ordinary community venue. Details from the SAPS statement showed that the five offenders — described as “convicted criminals” — had no valid reason for such violence and thus received the maximum penalties.
