JOHANNESBURG — A major “state capture” milestone landed this week after former ANC MP Vincent Smith was sentenced to seven years in prison for corruption linked to Bosasa, becoming the first politician to receive a custodial sentence connected to the scandal.
Smith admitted to receiving more than R800,000 in bribes and benefits from the security company in exchange for political assistance, according to reporting on the case.
The conviction is being read as a credibility test for South Africa’s broader accountability drive: the public has long demanded consequences for state-capture-era wrongdoing, but prosecutions have moved slowly and unevenly.
Analysis: why this sentence matters more than one politician
1) It changes the ‘impunity’ narrative. South Africans have heard promises for years; jail time is different. A custodial sentence helps rebuild belief that high-level corruption can carry real consequences — and that the state-capture era is not beyond the reach of the courts.
