Anti-immigrant protests weigh on SA economy ahead of elections

Violent marches disrupt businesses, spark economic concerns and threaten SA’s international image ahead of November local elections.

JOHANNESBURG — Analysts warn that violent anti-immigrant marches in June (the “March & March” campaign) have started to impact South Africa’s economy and international image. Despite many migrants voluntarily returning home (over 160,000 reportedly repatriated as of end-June), small businesses run by foreigners have been hit by looting and burnings. Some industry reports estimate the disruption cost millions in destroyed stock and lost trade. With local government elections due in November, xenophobic groups are threatening further protests.
