South Africa eliminated after 2-1 quarterfinal defeat to hosts Morocco; automatic World Cup hopes fade but playoff route remains open.

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s Banyana Banyana were eliminated from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-1 quarterfinal loss to hosts Morocco. Sakina Ouzraoui gave Morocco the lead in the 31st minute, and a Hanane Ait El Haj penalty (51′) doubled their advantage. Thembi Kgatlana pulled one back in the 67th minute, but South Africa could not find an equaliser.

With this defeat, South Africa’s hopes of automatic qualification for the next Women’s World Cup are now slim, though they may still aim for an inter-confederation playoff spot.
