Orlando Pirates storm into MTN8 semi‑final with extra-time win
JOHANNESBURG — Orlando Pirates booked a place in the MTN8 semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Durban City in Durban. The quarterfinal, played Saturday evening, saw Pirates trailing 0-1 at the end of regulation. In extra time, Pirates forward Tashreeq Matthews drew level, then Mathias Zulu blasted home the winner in the 112th minute. The win sets up a semi-final date between Pirates and either Kaizer Chiefs or Mamelodi Sundowns.
Analysis: Pirates’ extra-time win and what it means
1) Pirates’ resilience. Faced with an upset after conceding first, coach Mandla Ncikazi’s team showed character by pushing the game into extra time. The change in tactics (more attacking substitutions) paid off late. Matthews’ equaliser and Zulu’s strike were the rewards of persistent pressure.
2) City’s overperformance. Durban City FC (a smaller Durban side) held off Pirates for 90 minutes, reflecting the competitive nature of South African cup football. Though ultimately eliminated, City’s effort drew praise. Under-organization teams in SA often pride themselves on big performances in cup games.
3) MTN8 context. The MTN8 is a premier knockout cup for the top 8 PSL teams. Both Pirates and Chiefs (the two Soweto giants) have strong motivation as perennial trophy contenders. A Pirates-Chiefs showdown in the semi-finals is anticipated by fans, possibly renewing a fierce city derby.
What’s next
Orlando Pirates will now prepare for the two-legged MTN8 semi-final first leg scheduled mid-August. The club’s board and sponsors are delighted with the win; this result bolsters their season ambitions. Durban City will refocus on league play. All eight teams in the MTN8 remain contenders for the title.
